SCIENCE CITY

Location : San Juan, Puerto Rico

Project Year : 2004

The Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust is developing a world class 24/7 live/work research and development center on the grounds of a former state penitentiary based on a Master Plan led by James Corner (Field Operations) and developed together with ArchUd and Toro Ferrer Arquitectos. Innovative urban site and planting developed with landscape architect Rossana Vaccarino of Vaccarino & Associates, are central to the scheme where raised sidewalks, structural soil and pervious concrete provide ideal conditions for the growth of native species.  Rain Trees (Samanea saman) will form a gently shaded canopy along the main boulevard, a pattern of three species of native palms will line a bike lane and a secondary road will be lined by an urban forest of native tree species.
