Hero Image

Project by Toro Ferrer Arquitectos

The University of Puerto Rico Botanical Garden is a lush sanctuary of biodiversity, research, and conservation. However, despite its significance, the garden remained hidden from view, bisected by a major thoroughfare that made its entrance nearly imperceptible—even to those who knew of its existence.

To redefine its presence within the urban landscape, a striking new fence was introduced. Composed of weathering and galvanized steel pipes, the structure extends along both sides of the road, forming a rhythmic, kinetic pattern that minimizes its visual impact while enhancing the garden’s visibility. Aluminum tubes sheathed in highly reflective traffic film spell out “JARDÍN BOTÁNICO UPR,” creating a bold, dynamic landmark that interacts with the movement of passing vehicles.

Flanking the highway, sculptural gatehouses serve as welcoming entry points, providing clear access and reinforcing the garden’s identity. This thoughtful intervention reconnects the Botanical Garden with the city, transforming it into a more visible and inviting destination for visitors, researchers, and nature lovers alike.
