Project by Toro Ferrer Arquitectos

Following years of neglect and inadequate repairs, the 220,000-square-foot academic building—designed by Toro Ferrer Arquitectos and completed in 1970—underwent a comprehensive remodeling and rehabilitation. This facility, which houses the School of General Studies, required extensive updates to address structural, functional, and aesthetic concerns while preserving its architectural integrity.

As part of the structural improvements, new shear walls were integrated with utility chases, and seismic reinforcement was achieved using carbon fiber. Additional shear walls were introduced in the amphitheater building, and micro piles along with new foundations were installed to enhance stability. A new rooftop mechanical room was added to accommodate the upgraded infrastructure seamlessly within the existing structure.

In parallel with these technical upgrades, the façade restoration included a new window system that recalls the original infill panels while allowing for significantly improved natural light and ventilation through the use of wide jalousie windows. Interior renovations included new terrazzo flooring in the corridors, the restoration of wood details and terrazzo floors in the amphitheaters, and the installation of new railings to improve accessibility and safety. The integration of new air conditioning, acoustics, and audiovisual systems further enhances the building’s functionality, ensuring it meets contemporary academic needs while remaining true to its original architectural vision.
